PDF · Compress PDF

The images get lighter while the text stays put.

MightyBench re-saves the images inside your PDF so it takes up less space, and leaves the text exactly as it was. If compressing wouldn’t help, you get an unchanged copy, never a bigger file.

How it works

Three steps, start to finish.

  1. 01

    Open Compress PDF

Press ⌃⌥Space and type “shrink pdf”, or pick it from MightyBench’s menu bar icon.

  2. 02

Add a PDF, choose a level

Drop in the PDF that’s too big to send. Choose Balanced to keep images at full size, or Smallest if it will only be read on screen.

  3. 03

    Press Compress

The compressed copy arrives in a new dated folder in Downloads › MightyBench. It’s never bigger than the original, which stays exactly where it was.

The details

Small things, done properly.

  • Balanced keeps full size

Balanced re-saves images as JPEG but keeps them at full size, so nothing in the document is scaled down.

  • Smallest, for screens

Smallest also scales images for screen reading, the better fit for PDFs that will mostly be read on a display.

  • Text is left alone

Compression works on the images. Text is left exactly as it was, so it stays crisp and searchable.

  • Never bigger than before

If compression wouldn’t help, you get an unchanged copy instead of a file that grew.

  • Confidential stays local

Scans of IDs and signed contracts are compressed on your Mac with PDFKit. Nothing is uploaded and there’s no account.

FAQ

Questions about Compress PDF

Anything else? Email support@mightybench.com and a person will reply.

How do I reduce the size of a PDF on a Mac?

Open Compress PDF, drop the file in, choose Balanced or Smallest and press Compress. The compressed copy goes to a new dated folder in Downloads › MightyBench.

What’s the difference between Balanced and Smallest?

Balanced re-saves images as JPEG at full size. Smallest does that and also scales the images down for reading on screen.

Does Compress PDF change the text?

No. Text is left exactly as it was. Compression is applied to the images inside the PDF.

What if my PDF can’t get any smaller?

Then you get an unchanged copy. Compress PDF never hands back a file bigger than the one you started with.

Is it safe to compress confidential PDFs?

Yes. Compression runs on your Mac with Apple’s PDFKit, with no account and no upload, so bank statements and contracts never leave your machine.
