Files · Zip & Unzip

Archives that open cleanly anywhere.

Pack files and folders into one ZIP with the folder structure kept and Mac clutter left out, so it opens cleanly on Windows. Or extract ZIP and TAR archives, each into its own folder.

One-time purchase · macOS 26 Tahoe or later, Apple silicon recommended

How it works

Three steps, start to finish.

  1. 01

    Open Zip & Unzip

Press ⌃⌥Space and type “unzip”, or pick it from MightyBench’s menu bar icon.

  2. 02

    Zip or Extract

In Zip, drop files and folders, name the archive and add a password if you like. In Extract, drop .zip, .tar, .tgz or .tar.gz files.

  3. 03

    Press Zip or Extract

The archive, or one folder per extracted archive, lands in a new dated folder in Downloads › MightyBench. Your originals are left alone.

The details

Small things, done properly.

  • Folder structure kept

Folders inside folders stay that way, so whoever opens the ZIP sees exactly the layout you sent.

  • No .DS_Store or __MACOSX

Mac-only clutter is left out, so archives open cleanly on Windows and Linux without stray hidden files.

  • Optional password

Add a password when you make a ZIP. It uses standard ZIP encryption, which Windows and most unzip tools can open with the password.

  • One folder per archive

Each archive extracts into its own folder, so files from different archives never spill into each other.

  • ZIP, TAR, TGZ and TAR.GZ

Extract the ZIP files people email you and the TAR and TGZ archives that come with downloads, all from one tool.

  • Protected ZIPs open too

Got a ZIP with a password? Type it into the Password field in Extract mode and the archive unpacks as normal.

FAQ

Questions about Zip & Unzip

Anything else? Email support@mightybench.com and a person will reply.

How do I zip a folder on a Mac without .DS_Store files?

Open Zip & Unzip, drop the folder in and press Zip. .DS_Store files and __MACOSX folders are left out, and the ZIP lands in a new dated folder in Downloads › MightyBench.

How do I password-protect a ZIP file on a Mac?

Type a password in the Password field before pressing Zip. The archive uses standard ZIP encryption, so it opens in Windows and most unzip tools once the password is entered.

How do I open a .tar.gz or .tgz file on a Mac?

Switch Zip & Unzip to Extract and drop the archive in. It’s unpacked into its own folder inside a new dated folder in Downloads › MightyBench.

Can it open RAR or 7z files?

No. Zip & Unzip extracts ZIP, TAR, TGZ and TAR.GZ archives. RAR and 7z aren’t supported.

Can I extract several archives at once?

Yes. Drop them all in and each one is extracted into its own folder, so their contents never mix.

Will zipping change my original files?

No. Your files and folders stay where they are. The new ZIP is written to a new dated folder in Downloads › MightyBench.
