How do I use voice typing on a Mac?
Open Dictation, choose a hold key and press Turn On Dictation. From then on, hold that key in any app and talk; when you let go, the text is typed at your cursor.
What does Dictation need to work?
Microphone and Accessibility permission, plus a one-time language download. After that it works anywhere you can type.
Is my voice sent to the cloud?
No. Speech is turned into text on your Mac, Clean up uses Apple Intelligence on the same machine, and your history is stored locally.
Can I change the dictation key?
Yes. Under Hold to talk, choose fn (Globe), Right Option or Right Command. Whichever you pick becomes your dictation key in every app.
What does Clean up do?
It removes ums, false starts and repeats from what you said, using Apple Intelligence on-device. It’s a simple toggle, so you can turn it off at any time.
Can I teach it names and special terms?
Yes. Add them under Vocabulary and replacements. A replacement swaps a spoken phrase for text you set, like “my email” → your address.
Plus forty-eight other tools.
