The details
Small things, done properly.
-
The voices in your Mac
Text to Speech uses the voices that come with macOS, including the Premium and Enhanced voices you download in System Settings › Accessibility › Spoken Content.
-
Automatic picks the voice
Leave Voice on Automatic and each document is read in a voice that matches its language, so a French PDF gets a French voice.
-
Word, PDF, RTF and Markdown
Drop a mix of documents and each one becomes its own audio file. Or skip files altogether and type straight into the tool.
-
A speed that suits you
Slow it down for study notes or speed it up to get through a long report. The Speed slider sets the pace for the whole batch.
-
M4A that plays anywhere
Audio is saved as M4A (AAC), which plays in Music and QuickTime, on iPhone and iPad, and on most other devices.
-
Spoken on your Mac
Your text is turned into speech by macOS, on your Mac. Nothing is uploaded, and there’s no account or per-word fee.

How do I convert text to speech on a Mac?
Open Text to Speech, type or paste your text or drop a document, then pick a voice and speed. Press Create Audio and an M4A file appears in a new dated folder in Downloads › MightyBench.
Can I turn a PDF into an audiobook on my Mac?
Yes. Drop the PDF in and press Create Audio, and its text is read aloud into an M4A file. A scanned PDF with no text layer needs Make PDF Searchable first, so there’s text to read.
How do I get better, more natural voices?

What audio format does Text to Speech save?
M4A (AAC). Each document you drop becomes its own file, and text you type or paste is saved as one file.
Does it work with languages other than English?
Yes, for any language your Mac has a voice for. Choose Automatic and the voice is matched to each document’s language, or pick a specific voice yourself.
Is my text sent to a server?
